Issues
Issues In the near future this space will contain my thoughts on issues that I believe will be the central ones that should be debated in the upcoming campaign. (If you would like to offer a suggestion as to the issue which is the most important for you and why that is, please send me an e-mail.) For now, however, I'd like to share with you some of my foundational beliefs and philosophies that will shape my views on the critical issues as they emerge. 1. Each of us is a unique, equal and valuable part of God's creation. 2. Under the U. S. Constitution each citizen of this country is guaranteed freedom and certain rights. 3. That freedom and those rights must not be abridged either through legislation or the force of a mob. 4. The primary role of the federal government is to protect the nation against those forces, foreign or domestic, who would attempt to subjugate or destroy it. 5. The next most important role of the federal government is to insure that those incapable of protecting themselves, particularly children, the elderly and those with disabilities, are protected. 6. When the nation's founders crafted the unique arrangement of individual states and a federal government bound together in an equal and indivisible union, they created an environment in which a dynamic and healthy tension will always exist. 7. America's unique cultural diversity of people of different racial, ethnic, religious and geographic origins is one of our greatest resources. 8. Freedom is very fragile and needs constant maintenance. It is never guaranteed. When we take it for granted, or assume our intemperate actions will not damage it, we risk losing it. 9. Just because a majority of people believe something, it is not necessarily true, or the best approach to the solution of a problem. 10. In the arena of public opinion and debate, we are losing the ability to think critically about issues.
